Meru is best known for where Elsa the Lioness of Joy Adamson's
Born Free was rehabilitated to the wild. This 870 square kilometre
park is located east of Mount Kenya. the swamps are host to most
of Meru's 5000 buffalo, sometimes seen in herds of more than 200
and a number of elephant. Oryx, eland, reticulated giraffe and
Grevy's zebra are plentiful on the plains, where lion are also
most likelky to be seen. Lesser kudu, gerenuk and cheetah can
be found along with hippo and cross within the Tena River. Leopard
are also present, and over 300 species of birds have been recorded.
