To ensure that you book the most practical, economical and direct international flight for your African safari, we have compiled useful flight information on southern and east Africa’s main gateways.
Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) in South Africa is the main gateway to all southern African destinations. This includes South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.
There are daily scheduled flights between all the main cities and attractions across southern Africa from Johannesburg and/or Cape Town. Smaller, out-of-the-way destinations (such as lodges in remote areas) are reached by light aircraft, booked by us as part of a safari package.
USA to Southern Africa
Direct daily flights from the New York to Johannesburg are available as well as direct daily flights to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) from Atlanta.
Carriers flying into Johannesburg from the USA are South African Airways (code sharing with Delta Airlines).
Europe to Southern Africa
Direct daily flights from Europe to Johannesburg International Airport as well as London to Cape Town International Airport are available.
All the major European Airlines fly to Johannesburg International Airport. This includes British Airways, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, South African Airways and Air France.
There are two major gateways into east Africa.
- Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NRB) in Nairobi, Kenya is the main gateway to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
- Kilimanjaro International Airport (ARK) in Arusha, Tanzania is the gateway to the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Mount Kilimanjaro.
There are daily scheduled flights between Nairobi and Arusha (Tanzania) as well as between Nairobi and the East African islands of Mombasa and Zanzibar.
USA to East Africa
There are no direct flights between the USA and Nairobi, however the easiest is to travel to Nairobi via London.
It is also a great idea to fly to Nairobi or Arusha via Johannesburg in South Africa. This makes it possible to do a safari combining southern and east Africa.
Europe to East Africa
British Airways and Kenya Airways offer daily scheduled flights between London and Nairobi. KLM offers daily flights between Amsterdam and Nairobi as well as Amsterdam and Arusha.
South African Airways and Air Tanzania operate between Arusha and Johannesburg - another excellent opportunity to combine southern and east Africa.
