As The Safari Co. we have been promoting Africa for almost 15 years, and before that, since I can remember we've been exploring wilderness areas of Africa! When we're looking for a real safari our focus is on the overall experience. We look at various aspects such as the quality of equipment and vehicles, standard of food and the overal level of service. But more importantly we look at the guides ability to communicate well with guests and to clearly convey the wealth of information to the guests in a way that makes it easy to understand and appreciate the details of Africa. Another major aspect is the destinations chosen on a specific safari or the location of a camp/lodge/mobile safari.

Some of the questions we ask are:

	Does the safari take you into wilderness areas that offer a true safari experience?
	Is there a level of exclusivity in the places visited (this applies to a camping safari or a luxury lodge)?
	What type of wildlife experiences are given to the guests? The race to see the 'big 5' does not qualify. A focus on a wide range of experiences - mammals, birdlife, insects, plants, culture - are very important.
	Is the experience an authentic safari with the right mix that makes you feel richer at the end, or is it just made to feel that way with decor, fancy food and clever marketing jargon? If the mix is right, there's nothing wrong with good decor, tasty cuisine and good marketing, but the important aspects must be present.
