Windohoek is the capital and administrative, commercial and educational center of Namibia, situated in the center of the country. Sights include the Windhoek castles built between 1913 and 1918 and the State Museum at the Alte Feste. Tourists usually fly in from Johannesburg and stay over in Windhoek before they embark on their safaris into various directions.
The resort town of Swakopmund, located on the coast and surrounded by the Namib Desert, has many fine examples of German colonial architecture. Some travellers base themselves here and take day trips to Namib Naukluft National Park, Walvis Bay and the Cape Cross Seal reserve.
