A self drive holiday to Botswana is a great way to experience Africa's wild side. You can combine your Botswana selfdrive safari with a fly-in or guided transfer to explore the remoter wilderness areas and game parks due to its limited roads and infrastructure. |

Botswana is the real Africa - the major towns are linked with good tarred roads but the wilderness areas are remote and wild, with little or no infrastructure. Most of the attractions are situated in the north around the Okavango Delta, Moremi Wildlife Reserve, Savuti and Chobe National Park. The Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan National Park is just north of the Central Kalahari National Park - the Kalahari is definitely not a destination to explore on your own. Another authentic wilderness destination is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park that combines Botswana and South Africa to form this magnificent wildlife reserve.
Road signs are few and far between in some areas of Botswana, especially in the wildlife reserves and national parks. For example, in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve and the Okavango Delta the road systems (small sandy tracks) change yearly as the rising delta and the rain cause the roads to flood and become inaccessible. New roads are then made when the water subsides. Within the national parks there are no road signs (as the elephants are not road sign friendly!) and no infrastructure to replenish food supplies and other necessary items.
A popular option is to drive to Maun (the gateway to the Okavango) or Kasane (close to Chobe) and explore the more remote regions on a guided tour of fly-in safari. This allows you to see places not normally accessible by vehicle. If you decide to venture into the wilder regions on your own, be sure to go prepared. The challenging roads and remote wilderness areas will reward every adventurous traveler with superb wildlife experiences and close-to-nature safaris.
