Moremi,
located about (60km) from Maun, is a 3,000 sq km paradise set
in the middle of the Okavango Delta in one of the world’s
most pristine wilderness areas. The reserve was proclaimed in
1963 and consists of a network of waterways surrounding two main
islands; Chief’s Island in the west and the Sandveldt Tongue
in the east. Some of the diverse ecosystems found here include
mopane forest, flood plains, wetlands and reed beds, riverine
woodland and dry savannah woodland. The reserve offers a diverse
variety of wildlife and bird species (approx. 550). The Moremi
offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year.
Moremi
can be reached by air or road via Maun. A self-drive safari should
only be considered by the experienced four-wheel-drive enthusiasts
and only during the dry months. The roads turn to sandy tracks
once inside the reserve and not for the faint-hearted. The reserve
has three serviced campsites which are unfenced and offer a real
wilderness experience.
Other
options include mobile safaris where you traveling in small groups,
led by a guide and camping at private bush camps set aside for
exclusive use by these safari operators. Fly-in lodge safaris
offer more comfort and exclusivity. One of the most popular ways
to travel to these lodges is by light aircraft. Activities at
the lodges include game drives, boat trips on the delta and mokoro
rides (dug out canoe) through the channels and lagoons.
