description - the kgalagadi transfrontier park
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is situated in the southern Kalahari and is made up of two national parks - Botswana's Gemsbok National Park (73%) and South Africa's Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (27%). It was the first transfrontier park in Africa and is a massive 37 256 square km! The Kgalagadi is semi-arid region with splatters of rain between November and April. Extreme temperatures between seasons occur here, with winters as cold as -11°C at night and summers can reach a blistering 45°C during the day.

May to August is winter with dry, cool to cold weather overnight and warm to hot days. September and October is still dry with mild warm nights and hot days. Rainy season is from November to April and themperatures sore to the high 30's almost every day. Thunder showers cool things down a bit but be prepared for very high temperatures.

mammals of the kgalagadi
The Kgalagadi boasts with 60 species of mammalsand include large herds of antelope, especially oryx (gemsbok), springbok, blue wildebeest and eland. Red hartebeest also occur here. An abundance of rodents and reptiles are found here. These in combination with the antelope species support a wide variety of carnivores such as leopard, brown and spotted hyena, lion and cheetah, as well as black-backed jackal, caracal, bat-eared fox and the endangered Cape fox.

Some of the more unique mammals found in Kgalagadi is the pangolin, honey badger, wilddogs (on rare occasions) and Woosnam's rat. Not to be missed is the suricate, or meerkat with it's wonderfully intricate social family structures and hyper-active bahaviour.

birds of the kgalagadi
The Kgalagadi is famous for its birds of prey. Over 300 bird species have been recorded, including species endemic to the arid southwest region of southern Africa. Large nests of sociable weavers are characteristic of the region. One nest can be home to up to 300 birds! Ostrich is frequently spotted and the Kori bustard is always a good sighting. 52 raptors have been recorded in the Kgalagadi. Keep an open for the pygmy falcon which occurs here.

access to the kgalagadi
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a self drive destination. The Botswana part of the Kgalagadi allows for 4x4 access only. South Africa's side is ideal for 2x4 vehicles and a great alternative if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle.

There are a few trails that can be explored. All trials require a high clearance 4x4 vehicle with low range and travelers must be completely self sufficient for the entire duration of your visit. This includes water, food, fuel, vehicle tools and spares, firewood, spare tyres, tyre repair kit and camping equipment. A minimum of 2 vehicles and a maximum of 5 are permitted on each trail. No trailers are permitted.

Advance booking is essential and fees payable before starting the trails. Add a night before and a night after in the park, so make sure to book accordingly.

reservations for the kgalagadi
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is bookable through Botswana's Department of Wildlife and National Parks or South Africa's SANParks.

Pieter Van Deventer, South Africa

02 September 2010
Our trip to Botswana's Kgalagadi was planned with no real expectations as we have visited the South African side of the park numerous times. Were we surprised to find how different the experience was!? We enjoyed the isolation and complete exclusiveness found in the campsite scattered around the Botswana part of the Kgalagadi. We will strongly recommend any adventurous, well prepared traveler to visit the Kgalagadi for your next holiday...read full review
