Driving Tips:
»
It is a legal requirement that whilst driving in South Africa
you must be in possession of your
Drivers Licence at all times.
»
Driving is on the left hand side of the road.
»
Please bear the following speed limit in mind:
- Urban areas : 60 km per hour
- Main roads : 100km per hour
- Highways : 120km per hour
Speed limits are subject to road works and construction
»
When using an Avis vehicle, it is required that all drivers are
listed on the Rental Agreement documents in order to conform to
the necessary insurance requirements.
»
The law requires that you wear seat belts at all times
»
Warning signs are to international standards
»
Fuel is available 24 hours per day at filling stations along all
major highways, in all major business centres and towns and during
business hours in rural areas. A full tank of fuel normally allows
you to travel between 450 - 500km at 120 km/h. Unleaded should
be used in Avis cars.
»
Credit cards are not accepted for the payment of fuel.
»
There is an excellent network of tarred roads throughout South
Africa. When driving on a gravel road keep to the prescribed speed
limit of 60 - 70km/h and observe road traffic signs - particularly
those that indicate curves and sharp bends in the roads. Avoid
travelling on gravel roads at night and be on the alert for stray
or wild animals, pedestrians, cyclists and the unexpected. It
is advisable to switch on your vehicle headlights during dusty
conditions. Gravel roads can be very slippery when wet, washaways
and the build up of water at drifts or causeways can occur rapidly
during rainstorms.
»
Do not drink alcohol and drive in South Africa, as it is considered
to be a very serious offence.
