The word 'Zimbabwe' in Shona is Zimba Ramabwe which means 'big house of stone'. As you travel through the country you experience the beautiful rock formations and outcrops that gave it its name. Zimbabwe covers an area of 390 245km2 with a population of about 12 million people. The country is mostly on a plateau averaging 1200m elevation. The low river valleys get an annual rainfall of 400-600mm, the plateau gets 750-1000mm and the eastern highlands 1500-2000mm.
The game reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, safari areas and national parks make up 44 680 square km (around 10% of the land area) of protected areas.
