Pafuri
Camp is situated between the Limpopo and the Luvuvhu
Rivers in the northern sector of the Kruger National
Park, in a 24 000 hectare area called the Pafuri or
the Makuleke. This area is the ancestral home of the
Makuleke people and is the most diverse and scenically
attractive area in the Kruger National Park.
Being so different from the rest of the Park, it complements
the scenery and experience offered at the lodges in
the southern Kruger and the Sabi Sands. So to experience
the Kruger in its entirety, travellers visiting any
of the lodges in the south should then travel up to
the Pafuri / Makuleke region.
This area is certainly the wildest and most remote
part of the Park and offers varied vegetation, great
game viewing, the best birding in all of the Kruger
Park, and is filled with folklore of the early explorers
and ancient civilisations. Pafuri Camp, opened in 2005, cater for the traditional Kruger
Park visitor and will be the only camp accessible
to self-drivers in the extreme northern sector of
the Park.
Accommodation will consist of 17 tented rooms (including
three family rooms), each with en-suite bathroom facilities.
Guests will have the option to book onto any one of
our activities during their stay, including game drives
in open 4x4 vehicles, night drives throughout the
concession, birding walks, foot safaris and mountain
biking with an armed guide.
Guests can do selfdrives in and around the Kruger
National Park on the conventional roads in their own
vehicles. There can be no self driving at all in private
vehicles anywhere in the Makuleke concession except
on the main access road into and through the area.
If guests wish to walk, game drive or night drive
anywhere on the concession, then this has to be done
in the lodges 4x4 vehicles with the lodges resident
guides - all at additional costs to guests.

GAME VIEWING
The Makuleke Concession set within the
Kruger National Park is one of the few true wilderness
areas left in South Africa. Large herds of elephant
and buffalo are resident most of the year round. There
are resident prides of lion and the Luvuvhu riparian
system supports a healthy population of leopard. Wild
dog and Cheetah have been sighted hunting the strong
population of Nyala and Impala that live alongside
the Luvuvhu system on the southern boundary. On the
eastern most boundary at "Crooks Corner"
the Luvuvhu supports a large population of hippo and
crocodile. The Makuleke Concession is probably one
of the few places in the Kruger where you have a good
chance of spotting Eland and Sharpe's Grysbok, and
is regarded as probably the birding hotspot of South
Africa with specialities such as Pel's Fishing Owl,
Wattle-eyed Flycatcher, Goldenbacked Pytilia, Crowned
Eagles and Racket-tailed rollers.
