world heritage sites - info

World Heritage Sites recognise and protect areas of outstanding natural, historical and cultural value.

Given Africa's diverse culture and history and her spectacular natural resources and wildlife, it is not surprising that Africa boasts 78 World Heritage Sites.

We focus on the sites in southern and east Africa. The scenic beauty of the places that feature on the World Heritage list under the 'natural' category is worth a visit.

Have a look around and see some of the spectacular places that have been awarded 'World Heritage' status.

To plan your visit to Africa - use our travel guides, africa maps, articles, reviews, videos and photos so that you can make an informed decision about your holiday.

Some of the selection criteria to qualify as a World Heritage Site used by UNESCO:

to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius;
to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area;
to bear a unique or exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization - living or disappeared;
to contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance;
to be outstanding examples representing major stages of earth's history;
to be outstanding examples of on-going ecological and biological processes of plants and animals;
to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity.

The protection, management, authenticity and integrity of properties are also important considerations.
