Lesotho is also known as the 'Mountain Kingdom' for good reason! Beautiful mountains, crystal clear streams and rivers, deep valleys and grassy hills make up the scenery when traveling around Lesotho. This small country is completely surrounded by South Africa, but it feels like you're traveling in another continent when exploring Lesotho!
This mountain destinations is best visited on a packaged holiday as part of a group, or a self drive holiday (4x4 vehicles required). The roads are mostly dirt (gravel) with some parts fo the country not accessible during heavy snow in winter, and to a lesser degree during heavy rain storms in summer when rivers can temporarily close off roads. Lesotho is an adventure destinations for travelers in search of mountain scenery, spectacular waterfalls, pony trekking, 4x4 driving, fly-fishing and snow skiing.
Due to the inaccessibility of large parts of this beautiful country, it is undeveloped and unspoilt. There are two national parks in Lesotho

The plan was to explore eastern Lesotho on a week-long expedition visiting places of interest along the way. Five days of moderate to difficult 4x4 tracks, crossing mountain passes and rivers, finding waterfalls and hiking rolling green hills...that was the plan when two of us were going to rough it a bit with no rest days. Pony treks range from a few hour to multi-day treks covering longer distances while meeting the friendly locals and staying over in traditional homesteads along the way. |

As a fly-fishing destination, Lesotho is one of the best there is in Africa! Fresh water fly-fishing doesn't come any better than this. Crystal clear rivers with wild trout in secret spots are what you can look forward to. Most fishing can be done from the different lodges dotted across this mountaineous country. |

Lesotho is 4x4 country! It is a beautiful destination to explore in a 4x4 vehicle. Just be aware that during certain times of the year some areas become inaccessible due to snow (in winter) or rain (in summer). Another benefit of traveling by 4x4 in Lesotho is the hospitality of the locals - stay over at homesteads along the way and enjoy the real Lesotho. |

The Maluti Mountains are hiking nirvana! There are no marked trails, but many of the lodges will gladly give you tips and pointers on hikes in their surrounding areas. It is advisable to be prepared as the weather in these mountians can change in minutes. Local guides are available. For multi day hikes, make use of pack animals. Sethlabathebe National Park is a fantastic place for day hikes. |

Abseiling off the Maletsunyane Waterfall takes nerves of steal...it is the world's highest commercial abseil and it doesn't get better than this! It's a whopping 204m, so stock up on the guts and courage! Semonkong Lodge will gladly assist with the organising of this activity. |

Mountain biking in Lesotho takes you to some of the most spectacular sights on day rides or more challenging multi day adventure rides. Bring your own MTB and kit to enjoy some of Africa's most exhillirating rides! Some of wildest offroad bike rides are available in Lesotho. The Roof of Africa (one of the toughest offroad bike races in the world) is held here every year! Just find a place to use as a base and explore this incredible place on your bike. Always be respectful of the fact that you will be crossing private land where people live, grow crops and graze their animals. Be friendly and stop for a chat! |
