NOTE: this is only a suggested route and some areas are not accessible during the Okavango's wet season when the water reaches far into the Moremi and flood many of the roads. Access into the Okavango Delta is by light aircraft and helicopter all year round. Please check with Botswana travel experts regarding the conditions at the time of your planned self drive safari.

This self drive route starts in Maun and ends in Victoria Falls. It travels through the wilderness areas of northeastern Botswana. The route is planned to reduce long days of driving and to spend at least two days at a destination.

The Victoria Falls

best time to explore botswana

The best time to travel is generally between July and October (but this is also high season). The route is best driven in the dry season between May and October. The wet season (November to April) can be challenging due to deep water crossings and thick mud, depending on the exact route you choose. The winter months - June to August - can be cold enough to make you wear a jacket at night and early mornings, and sleep with a warm water bottle. During the day it is pleasantly warm to hot.

Botswana offers exceptional wildlife and game viewing all year round. It is important to take note that certain seasons are ideal for special interest travelers:
- Birding season is from Nov - March when the Okavango Delta is home to the many migratory birds during their breeding season.
- Botanical season is from Dec - May when the vegetation is lush and green, and also when most plants are in flower.
- Photography is excellent year-round, but depending on what your main interests are, note that the scenery is most spectacular from Sept - Feb during the first rains. For wildlife photography the winter months from May - Sept is best, as the vegetation is less dense and game viewing is generally more prolific.
