NOTE: this is only a suggested route and some areas are not accessible during the wet season when the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans fill with water. Even after the pans have dried out it is still risky to drive there as the mud is hidden under a thin crust. Please check with Botswana travel experts regarding the conditions at the time of your planned self drive safari. Take an alternative route (via Nata) during the wet season.
