We make use of three deep cycle and one standard batteries in our expedition vehicle (1 deepcycle and 1 standard) and offroad trailer (2 deepcycle). During our expeditions we depend on the reliability of our batteries to provide us with power for our fridges, lights and charging of laptops and camera batteries. The solution for our set up is to maintain our batteries to its optimum charge to prevent damage.
We've opted for two CTEK battery chargers to charge with 12V, 220V and solar.

The D250S DUAL is a fully automatic 5-stage charger that supplies 20 A to 12 V batteries of 40–300 Ah.
The charger is water jet and dust protected and approved for outdoor use and protects vehicle electronics. It is suitable for all types of lead-acid batteries (Wet, MF, Gel, AGM). |
The MXS 10 is a charger that offers state of the art technology. It is ideal for professional use and excellent in workshops, caravans, RVs, boats or cars. The MXS 10 is perfect for solving a broad range of battery problems.
It offers features such as battery diagnosis that shows if a battery can receive and retain a charge, a special reconditioning function that restores stratified and deeply discharged batteries, unique maintenance charging and a temperature sensor for optimised charging regardless of the weather conditions. It also has a power supply mode which allows the battery to be disconnected from the vehicle without losing important configurations. The unique display allows the user to follow the entire charging process.

The D250S DUAL charger obtains its energy from DC sources such as
alternators, solar panels or wind power and optimises this power to meet the charging requirements of different battery banks. The D250S DUAL automatically selects the best connected DC energy source (of 2) for the purpose and switches between these energy sources to achieve high efficiency multi-stage charging. The D250S DUAL is particularly suitable for charging vehicles that do not have access to grid power supplies. Charging automatically starts as soon as DC energy is provided to the charger, for example, from alternators when a vehicle is started or from solar panels when connected. The COMFORT INDICATOR indicates when the battery status decreases and the battery needs to be charged.
The reason for these new products (The Comfort Indicator) is the harmful stratifying process within a battery that starts when the battery voltage drops below 90% of the full battery capacity. When the battery is kept under charged, it loses capacity prematurely, shortening its life. Controlling the battery level continuously and charging when needed will prolong the life expectancy of the battery.
The COMFORT INDICATOR is easy to use and provides the tool to keep the batteries fresh and extends its life expectancy.
We installed the COMFORT INDICATOR
in the dashboard of our vehicle and it makes monitoring and charging the battery easy and painless by plugging the MXS 10 into the plug point without having to open the bonnet of the vehicle.
Green light means that the battery is OK and does not need to be charged.
Yellow light means that the battery should be charged to avoid stratification.
Red light means that the battery needs charging to be able to start the vehicle.
With peace-of-mind and ease-of-useas two important aspects of our electrical system, the CTEK COMFORT INDICATOR works well with our expedition vehicle and trailer.
