So my family and I are playing with the idea of traveling around Africa for an extended period of time or possibly traveling for a few months, then come back to a base before heading off again.

Exciting. Scary. Exhilarating. Much needed.

These are the words that flirt with my thoughts when I think of packing our Land Cruiser, hooking up the offroad trailer, and taking the family on a long road trip around Africa. Man, it puts a smile on my face every time I think about it!

My kids can’t wait to ‘explore Africa’. They love the bush and anything wild, and the city just cannot contain these two! My wife loves creating beautiful images. There is something in us that just want to discover new horizons, meet new people and experience the beauty of Africa.

I think it runs in my genes. My Grandfather was a real life explorer. He spent months at a time in the wilds of Africa collecting specimens and samples for museums (some of his work can still be seen in the Windhoek Museum). This was in the days when a second set of clothes were regarded a luxury, and your next meal had to be caught! Luckily these days we’ll be enjoying true camping in style.

But what would make us pack up and travel around Africa indefinitely? Firstly, we have a deep passion for Africa, it’s friendly people and the fascinating places. Secondly, we’re the owners of The Safari Co., a marketing platform that promotes Africa via the internet and it gives us the freedom to work while we travel. Africa is where our clients are based (the travel industry) and it’s what travelers want to read about on The Safari Co. So we get to meet our industry partners face to face, and we tell the world first-hand about the amazing places that await them.

We have a dream to make a difference in the lives of the poor in Africa. On past travels around Africa we’ve  seen good people really have it hard and we’ve thought of ways to make a difference (more about this in another post). I reckon, we’d be crazy not to do it!

So let us know what you think. Are we crazy? Follow our thoughts, ideas, preparations and moments as we make decisions about this epic, life changing adventure! And let us know if you’re based in Africa somewhere so that we can meet up to say hello and have a cup of coffee (we’ll definitely pack our favourite brew to share along the way).

Should be fun, don’t you think?
