The Drakenberg Mountains in South Africa is host to some of the most spectacular mountain scenes on the African continent. Patience and an eye for detail can deliver beautiful images of life in the ‘berg’ as the local refer to it.

George Schmahl spent time at the Vulture Hide close to Giant’s Castle in the central Drakensberg. He was there to photograph some of the regulars in this area: bearded vulture, Cape vulture, jackal buzzard and a variety of chats and ravens. The following battle unfolded in front of their eyes as two black-backed jackal and around thirty vultures fought it out over a carcass. Here is a photo essay of what he captured on film.

The above image was nominated as the best photo in the Beeld and Die Burger nature photo competition. (The competition was run in the Buite section). This image was selected from more than 8 000 entries.
