So what does Mars have to do with a blog about African safaris, you may ask? Well, it might look like Mars but in actual fact it is a satellite view of the stunning Spitzkoppe in central Namibia. These bold granite peaks are located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert. The highest outcrop rises about 1784 meters (5857 feet) above sea level. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 700m above the floor of the desert below.
Best time to photograph these rock formations are early morning and late afternoon, which necessitates an overnight stop. A pleasant campsite makes this an ideal stop-over on a self drive safari in Namibia. It is paradise for any traveler that enjoys exploring with some interesting rock formations to discover.
A must-do on any visit to Namibia.
