Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Ellerman House, Cape Town, South Africa

On arrival, you will be met at Cape Town International airport by our representative who will be transferring you to the magnificent Ellerman House, Cape Town.

The 5 star luxury boutique hotel Ellerman House nestles on the slopes of Signal Hill in Bantry Bay, providing beautiful views of the city, the Bay, the V&A Waterfront, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island. This magnificent view can be enjoyed from the private balconies of the rooms and suites, from the lounge areas of the hotel as well as from the lawned terraces which surround the spacious outdoor swimming pool at the Ellerman House.

Cape Town is one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world. Cradled by Table Mountain, it has immense charm and historical interest whilst it's unique cultural blend; part African, part European and part Asian, makes for a cosmopolitan dining experience.
Your day is at leisure today to relax after the long flight and enjoy dinner at Ellerman House or one of Cape Town's great restaurants.

Day 2: Ellerman House, Cape Town, South Africa

FULL DAY CAPE POINT & CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
After breakfast this morning, your driver will collect you from Ellerman House and take
you on a full day tour of the Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope.

We travel along the Atlantic seaboard passing the twelve apostles. Drive past Camps Bay named after a German immigrant Ernst Von Kampz, on past Oudekraal toward Hout Bay, an old woodcutters outpost named "wood bay". Visit to the picturesque fishing harbour and an optional tour by boat to seal island (40 min return) Hout Bay Harbour. Depart Hout Bay over Chapmans Peak - continueing towards Noordhoek –with it's spectacular beach, travelling along the Atlantic Coastline – passing the seaside villages of Kommetjie and Scarborough – with it's supply of Cape Rock Lobster. We then proceed towards Cape of Good Hope nature reserve. (8500 ha) 7 Species of antelope including the Eland, Bontebok and Cape mountain Zebra are to be found here. Down to Cape Point, the most South Westerly point of Africa (18 deg. East. Lat, 34 deg South Long) Arrive at Cape Point. Depart Cape point for visit to Cape of Good Hope.

Lunch is included at the Seaforth restaurant, located right on the beach at Boulders Beach, Simonstown.

After a leisurely lunch we depart the Seaforth restaurant via the lovely town of Simonstown. Named after the first Governor of the Cape Simon Van Der Stel. Also an important Naval base for the British who occupied the town for 150 years. We visit a lovely Penguin colony at Boulders beach. One of three African Penguin colonies inhabiting the mainland.

CHAPMAN'S PEAK DRIVE
Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the most spectacular coastal roads in South Africa. It starts at the picturesque fishing harbour of Hout Bay and then winds up to Chapman's Point, revealing breathtaking views of the sandy bays down below, until the road reaches sea level again at Noordhoek.

The 9km route with its 114 curves skirts Chapman Peak, the 593m southerly extension
of Constantiaberg and follows the rocky coastline to unfold stunning views in both directions.
There are numerous parking bays and picnic spots along the road and on the slopes.
A hiking trail with beautiful views leads to the Chapman's Peak.

CAPE POINT
This Landmark is part of Table Mountain National Park and is located at the end of the Cape Peninsula. In 1488 Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape during a dreadful storm. He subsequently named it the Cape of Storms. On a second voyage, the weather was much kinder to him and he renamed it the Cape of Good Hope. A few years later, Dias died while trying to round the Cape.

A monument in the form of a navigational beacon has been erected in the Park in his honour.

The Park offers a rich diversity of plant species as well as a marine reserve and animals such as baboons and Cape Zebra. The peak is 249m above sea level and can be reached by foot or the funicular railway. The lighthouse at the tip of the Peninsula is the most powerful in the Southern Hemisphere.

BOULDERS BEACH
In 1982 two breeding pairs of African penguins (once known as Jackass penguins because of the braying sound they make) moved into prime beachfront estate at Boulders Beach.
Today there are over 3 000 of these birds living here and the area is now a National Park. Penguins can be viewed up close as they frolic in the water and waddle on land. You're likely to see penguin pairs strolling along the boardwalks and in the park.
This is the one place in the world you will be able to swim and sunbathe with penguins. In a survey done by the BBC, Boulders Beach was rated one of the five best beaches to visit before you die.

Return to Ellerman House...

Day 3: Ellerman House, Cape Town, South Africa

Today after breakfast you have the option of taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and later a visit by ferry to Robben Island...

Since the first person laid eyes on Table Mountain, it has exerted its powerful and charismatic pull, enchanting and drawing any and all who fall under its spell.

Table Mountain's magnetism has a way of drawing people in, compelling them to reach the summit. But getting to the top was not always the effortless trip it is today.

Before the Cableway was established, the only way up Cape Town's iconic mountain was by foot - a climb undertaken only by adventurous souls.

ROBBEN ISLAND: People lived on Robben Island many thousands of years ago, when the sea channel between the Island and the Cape mainland was not covered with water. Since the Dutch settled at the Cape in the mid-1600s, Robben Island has been used primarily as a prison.

Indigenous African leaders, Muslim leaders from the East Indies, Dutch and British soldiers and civilians, women, and anti-apartheid activists, including South Africa's first democratic President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and the founding leader of the Pan Africanist Congress, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, were all imprisoned on the Island.

Since 1997 it has been a museum and a heritage site. The museum is a dynamic institution, which acts as a focal point of South African heritage. It runs educational programmes for schools, youths and adults, facilitates tourism development, conducts ongoing research related to the Island and fulfils an archiving function.

Day 4: Le Quartier Franscais, Franschhoek, South Africa

This morning check out and your guide will take you out towards Franschhoek where you will spend the following two nights at Le Quartier Franscais.

Whether it is its magnificent natural beauty, its rich cultural heritage or its world-renowned wines, the Winelands Region is synonymous with all the best that the Cape has to offer. A 45-minute drive from Cape Town brings you to this area where splendid mountains form a dramatic backdrop to lush vineyards and gabled Cape Dutch homesteads steeped in history. Come experience the hospitality and beauty of Stellenbosch, Paarl, & Franschoek. The diversity of the Winelands will capture every heart.

Departing Cape Town, our first stop in the Winelands will be Plaisir De Merle Wine Estate – where you will enjoy a Premium Wine Tasting and Cellar Tour .

The farm Plaisir de Merle has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to 1687, when as a result of poverty and religious persecution, the Huguenot Charles Marais and his family left the Hamlet of Le Plessis Marly, France, and sailed to the Cape of Good Hope to begin a new life.

In 1688 the Marais family, together with other Huguenots, was settled by Simon van der Stel in the area of Drakenstein, amidst the mountain splendour of the Berg River Valley. Charles Marais called his farm Le Pessis Marly, (which gradually became evolved to Plaisir de Merle) as a tribute to his birthplace. In 1964 Plaisir de Merle was purchased by Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery (now Distell) from its most recent owners, the Gray family, and today is one of the largest wine farms in the Cape. Covering 974 hectares, it consists of five adjoining sections, namely Plaisir de Merle, Rust-en Vrede, Drostersnes, La Rochelle and Rachelsfontein. It has often been said that good wines begin in the soil and at Plaisir de Merle the quality of the arable land is undeniably excellent. This factor and an abundant supply of fresh mountain water, contribute to the excellence of the end product.

We depart Plaisir de Merle and head to the French Huguenot town of Franschoek - with time to explore the village and shops prior to lunch.

Nestled between towering mountains in the beautiful Cape Winelands; lies the magnificent Franschoek Valley. This is the food and wine heartland of the country, where splendid wines are grown and our top chefs create international cuisine. Here breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines all combine to create lasting memories.

Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history cantered around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people.
In the village you will find wonderful crafts, art and antique shops and galleries. The main street is lined with coffee shops and restaurants.

13h00 Enjoy lunch at one of the top Franschoek restaurants...excluded.

After lunch check in at Le Quartier Francais after which more wine tastings await you during the afternoon before returning to your hotel for the evening. There are great restaurants within safe walking distance of Le Quartier Franscais.

Le Quartier Français is an exclusive boutique hotel situated in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley. Tucked away in secluded gardens, with beautiful views, it is a fairytale-like haven of tranquillity. A complete gastronomic journey can be experienced at Le Quartier Franscais.

Sticky buns for breakfast, WOW-bites on The Common Room terrace and award-winning South African inspired cuisine by Margot Janse in the award-winning Tasting Room. It is the extra-ordinary Staff, the opulently comfortable rooms and the attention to detail that ensure that this Relais & Chateaux Auberge is the ultimate spoiling.

Day 5 : Le Quartier Franscais, Franschhoek, South Africa

Today after breakfast at your hotel, set off to explore Stellenbosch wine estates...

From Franschhoek, we proceed over the Helshoogte Pass – The Link between Stellenbosch and the Drakenstein Valley is Helshoogte Pass (Hell's Heights'). This scenic pass crosses the saddle separating Simonsberg from the Jonkershoekberge, and at its summit are the Delaire and Thelema wineries. The road winds through a landscape adorned with fruit farms, Cape Dutch houses and vineyards before reaching Boschendal, a wine estate at the foot of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains.

Explore the town of Stellenbosch.

Follow in the footsteps of our ancestors as you stroll along the oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in the country. Our colourful history comes to life in the splendidly restored Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings in each town. Monuments such as the Huguenot Memorial and Afrikaans Language Monument and the many outstanding museums provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The excellent wines produced in this area are world-renowned. You will be spoilt for choice between small, boutique wineries and the larger, more commercial wine estates. Taste the fruit of the vintner's labour in the magnificent surrounds that are so characteristic of the Winelands, or join the winemaker on a tour of his cellar where the precious harvest is lovingly transformed into every wine lover's delight.

We end our day with a Chocolate and Wine tasting at the Award Winning Wine Estate of Waterford.

Waterford Estate is situated in one of the world's most visually arresting pockets of paradise. Nestled in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, in the world-renowned Stellenbosch region, this 120-hectare property boasts ancient citrus groves, rolling lawns, water features and fragrant lavender beds.

The winery was designed by architect Alex Walker and created from quarried local bedrock, stones from the vineyard and timber grown on the estate. It was styled along the engaging terracotta design of the classic Bordeaux chateaus of France. The centre piece of the magnificent courtyard is the Waterford fountain. This feature has been immortalised in the Waterford label and represents a fundamental component of our philosophy.

After a wonderful day sampling award Winning wines and enjoying the beauty and rolling vineyards of this beautiful part of the Cape return to Le Quartier Francias, Franschhoek.

You may wish to book a spa treatment during your visit at Le Quartier Franscais

Day 6: The Marine, Hermanus, South Africa

This morning after breakfast, check out and head for the lovely coastal town of Hermanus. Arrive in time for lunch and a walk on the beach or through the town...The hotel overlooks Walker Bay, renowned for whale spotting, however in February whale sighting are limited.

The principal cave is one of the country's finest, best known and most popular tourist caves and attracts many visitors from all over. Day 9: The Plettenberg, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

A lookout has been erected on the Eastern Head, commanding spectacular views of the lagoon, Leisure Isle and Knysna. The Western Head is a privately owned nature Reserve - Featherbed.

'Those twin pyramidical rocks defining the entrance to the Knysna lagoon from a Scylla and Charybdis, whence issues the stunning thunder of never-ceasing breakers that whirl and bellow with convulsive shocks - a bare, black, broken surface, emerging at one moment like the many-headed Hydra - at the next drinking up the white waves, and vomiting forth into a thousand fantastic cascades a frothy spume which reflects the prismatic colors of the iris' Captain (later Sir) William Cornwallis Harris, describing the Heads, 1840...

The Heads are a pair of craggy sentinels, past which the sea rushes into the lagoon to meet the Knysna River.
