Amboseli Porini Camp is located in the Selenkay Conservation Area, a 15,000-acre private game reserve within a vast tract of land owned by the Kisonko clan of the Maasai people.
The conservancy is an important dispersal area for wildlife moving in and out of Amboseli and holds a wide diversity of species. In addition to the better know big game like elephant, lion, cheetah, giraffe and zebra, there are several less common species such as caracal, African wildcat, civet, gerenuk, lesser kudu and striped hyena.
Our private four-wheel drive track links the Selenkay Conservancy to the Amboseli National Park so that we have the advantage of game drives in the park as well as in our own exclusive reserve. |

The Camp consists of nine spacious tents, sited among shady Acacia Tortilis trees, in a spot once favoured by big game hunters. The camp is small and exclusive, accommodating a maximum of 18 guests. It is set up along the lines of the traditional hunting safari bush camp, so there are no permanent structures like bar or restaurant or swimming pool – this is real camping in the bush, but with much more comfortable bathroom arrangements than were available to the hunters of earlier years!
The tents are large and comfortably furnished, each with a double and a single bed, solar-powered lights, and en-suite bathroom with safari shower, washbasin and flush toilet. Meals are taken under the shade of an Acaia tree and after dinner we can sit around the campfire and list to the sounds of the African night.
The camp is staffed entirely by members of the local Maasai community apart from the manager and head chef. |

All transport on this safari is in specially designed open-sided Landover 4 wheel drive safari vehicle. Going on safari in a "proper" safari vehicle gives a far better safari experience than travelling the minibus vans with window seats used by other tour operators!
There are no minibuses or other tourists or vehicles in the conservancy, allowing guests to enjoy a unique experience compared to traditional mass-tourist lodges and camps. Maasai warriors escort guests on a walk in the conservancy where they can learn about how the various indigenous animals and plants are used by the community and how their way of life is intertwined with their surroundings. Guests are taken to a local Maasai village where they can experience a little of traditional Maasai village where they can experience a little of traditional Maasai village lie.
Sundowners with views of Mt Kilimanjaro and night game drives are all part of the experience at Porini Amboseli. |

In 2004 the Ol Pejeta Reserve was purchased by Fauna and Flora International, a UK based conservation organization. The Sweetwaters game reserve has now be extended to encompass the entire ranching area to form the "Ol Pejeta Conservancy", approximately 90,000 acres in size. This has created the largest sanctuary in East Africa for the endangered Black Rhino. The aim of the Conservancy is to generate profits from wildlife tourism for reinvesting into community development in the local area. Porini Camp was selected as one of the Camps to help in accomplishing these goals.
Our Porini Camps are run and maintained with the conservation of the environment at the forefront. We have a written environmental policy in regards to water, land, energy, solid waste and sewage which is adhered to by the camp management. The numbers of tourist visitors are being limited to retain the wild and unspoilt nature of the area and to minimise the impact on the environment. |

Our Kenya safari was such a memorable experience and we wanted to let you know how our stay at the Porini Camps made all the difference! We read about the crowds in places like the Masai Mara and almost decided to go elsewhere. But then we received the Porini package and we were convinced that Kenya will deliver a true safari experience. The exclusivity of the wildlife conservancies are ideal for... |
